ATLANTA (Aug. 29, 2011) - As August draws to a close, we have to bid our summer interns goodbye. We thought it would be fun to sit down with interns Justin Smith and West Barnwell to hear about their Cater internship experience. West Barnwell
West Barnwell, a rising senior at the University of Georgia majoring in real estate, interned on Carter’s investments team. In the last three months, he took part in the acquisition of The Medici, assisted in a multi-family acquisition and witnessed the sales process of two major internal business units. West also compiled data on lease and sale comps for Carter’s database. For the southeast, he added over 34 million square feet of office building sales and 50 million square feet in industrial sales that occurred since January 2009. For lease comps, he added 11.5 million square feet of leasing transactions for all property types in Atlanta. 7.5 million square feet of those transactions occurred since 2010.
“I often hear about how terrible the market is and how there are hardly any deals happening,” said West. “During my internship at Carter, I realized that while there aren’t the number of deals happening as in the pre-recession level, plenty of opportunities exist for those who have the resources and are willing to take risks.”
Justin Smith
Justin Smith is an intern on Carter’s Program Development Services (PDS) group. With an undergraduate degree in civil engineering, Justin is currently pursuing an MBA at Babson College in Boston. Looking to break into commercial real estate, he wanted to intern for a firm that was well regarded as a major player in the United Stated. He heard about Carter via a NAREIT ranking where Carter was listed as a top commercial office developer.
“My time at Carter has been filled with learning about the various aspects of real estate development,” said Justin. “These experiences range from preparing pro-formas on student housing deals to shadowing a project manager involved in a historical renovation of a local college campus building. As an intern you expect to do grunt work, but at Carter I have been surprised by my inclusion on several projects. Carter is a great firm, with its greatest asset being the people. This internship has been invaluable to the progression of my career and I’m thankful for the opportunity Carter has given me.”
